Electric mobility grew strongly in 2017 and has been continuing to do so during the first quarter of 2018 in Europe. Despite these promising figures, there are disparities between European countries. Logically, the countries with the best sales results are those with public incentive policies, such as Norway, France, Germany and the Netherlands.
In 2017, there were more than 500,000 electric vehicles on the road in Europe, thanks to the registering of 150,000 new vehicles during the year (+ 44 %).
During the 1st semester of 2018, the sales of electric vehicles in Europe were up 38.5% compared to the same period last year. These sales accounted for 0.98% of the total volume of vehicle sales in Europe, compared to 0.85% at the end of 2017.
In 2020, the number of load points was almost 200,000 in Europe, compared to 100,000 in 2017, 70,000 at the end of 2016 and 50,000 in 2015.
In total, nearly 33,800 electric vehicles were registered in Norway in 2017. This Scandinavian country dominates the European market with more than 1 vehicle out of 5 being 100% electric.
In the same year, the number of electric vehicles registered in France was around 31,000, compared to nearly 29,000 in Germany and 14,700 in the United Kingdom.
In 2017, 750,000 electric vehicles were sold around the world, representing an increase of 68% in comparison to 2016. The symbolic threshold of one million electric vehicles sold should be reached for the 1st time in 2018.
The Netherlands has the largest number of charging stations in Europe, with more than 43,000 units. This is a high figure in relation to the size of the country. They are followed by Germany, with more than 32,000 charging points, France, with almost 30,000, the United Kingdom with more than 24,000, and Norway with more than 12,000.
Over 35,000 electric vehicles were sold by Renault in Europe in 2017, which makes for a growth of +38.4% versus 2016 and a market share of nearly 24%.
At the end of the 1st semester of 2018, Renault had sold close to 21,000 electric vehicles, an 11.6% increase over the same timeframe last year. At the global level, Groupe Renault sold close to 41,000 electric vehicles in 2017.
Worldwide, green energy production is increasing every year. In 2017, global solar photovoltaic capacity was up 32%, although hydroelectricity remains the main driver of power generation worldwide. For example, in Germany on January 1st 2018, all the energy produced countrywide was 100% green. This renewable energy was provided by wind turbines, biomass and hydraulic facilities.
China tops the list with more than 600,000 NEV (New Electric Vehicles) registered in 2017. The United States comes in second with more than 200,000 units. Norway is next with more than 62,300 new registrations, followed closely by Japan and its 56,000 sales. Germany finishes off the top 5 with 58,000 NEV sold. This category includes both 100% electric vehicles and plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEV). Non-rechargeable hybrids are, however, not counted.
