Urban mobility: what’s MaaS?

Faced with the challenge of the energy transition, the world of urban transport is reinventing itself. In this context, MaaS (Mobility as a Service) offers an environmentally friendly alternative to current mobility solutions. What’s the concept behind it? The idea is to group together, in a single mobile app, all the transport solutions that are available within a metropolis.

Maas is a concept that was brought to us from Finland: in the country’s capital, Helsinki, it’s already a reality. Everyone can plan their route, purchase a tube ticket, rent a bike or a self-service car, or hire a taxi, all with the swipe of a finger. You can pay at the end of each trip or via a monthly subscription.

The urban development of major cities depends not only the multiplication of means of public transport but also their complementarity for more multimodality, inter-modality and even co-modality. The logic behind MaaS promotes less individual and more virtuous urban mobility, especially relying on the development of electric vehicles and carsharing.
